On the specific of the potential to dumb down using pop culture, let me agree that it is a trap and there are plenty of people doing this out there which damages the essential notion that music is a good analogy for business and leadership with some transferable lessons (and plenty of non-transferable lessons).

In my case, I found there is an equal trap of ‘dumbing down’ by letting executives use MBA speak which they frequently use as an excuse for not dealing with the real issues.

My conferences tend to ‘dumb up’ by challenging some of the academic jargon with a purer and simpler language that comes from the ‘street’. It is indeed rather tempting to go and do conference sessions on the Mick Jagger guide to business, but it’s not where I’m at. My purpose is to help people find simpler and more constuctive ways to do business without the gobbledegook of business schools.
